John Stezaker
Biography
°1949, Worcester, UK
Lives and works in London.
Stezaker studied at the Slade School of Art in London.
Stezaker became fascinated by the use of images that had nothing to do with the then current cultural forms of expression, like in pop art. Combining/assembling found images (photographs) instantly generated a different form of aesthetics, in which anachronisms and a vagueness about intentions took control of a well made (visual) plot that served to disrupt the public’s perception.
Notable exhibitions include the Venice Biennale, Biennale of Sydney and the Whitchapel Art Gallery in London. Stezaker’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Rubell Family Collection, Miami; the Tate Collection, London and the Saatchi Collection, London, among others.
John Stezaker is represented by Gallery Sofie Van de Velde, The approach (London), Galerie Gisela Capitain (Cologne).
